Explorer is accessible when the user scans a QR code on an Interactive Kiosk using the camera on their smartphone device. This hands off Explorer to their mobile browser in a responsive and adaptive way which enhances the user experience as they now have a version of the Interactive Kiosk map on their smartphone.

This article has been divided up into different sections, for your convenience, if needed.

The way Explorer is presented is influenced by the settings you configure inside PAM OS.
Any changes that you make to the Interactive Kiosk, this will also be implemented into Explorer.

Supported Software for Explorer

  • iOS 14.4 and above

  • Android 10 and above

Please remember to update your smartphone operating system to the latest version when prompted to avoid any performance and glitching issues.

Accessing Explorer

For customers to access Explorer, they scan the provided QR code upon reaching the venue to gain access.

If you need to use Explorer on your phone to see the changes you have made but need access to a QR code, please follow these next steps.

To generate a QR code, you need an existing digital sign

Once you have an existing digital sign, we can proceed.

Steps

1. In the PAM navigation menu, go to 360 Planner > Digital Signs

2. Select DIGITAL SIGN MAP tab

3. Search / use the filter to find an Interactive Kiosk Digital Sign. Click on it once a sign is located.

4. Stay on the GENERAL tab


5. Scroll down to the bottom and you will see the QR code.
Scan the QR code with your smartphone.

There will be two options at the bottom of the QR code

6. Click on [DOWNLOAD] to save a copy of the QR code if you wish to print a hard copy and place it on physical signage at your location for customers to scan

7. Click on [OPEN LINK] to open Explorer on your laptop / monitor. Although Explorer is designed for smartphones, having this option allows you to use Explorer on your computer device if you don’t have access to a smartphone

You can also gain access to a QR code in the dashboard page of PAM OS.

1. Notice the QR code on the dashboard page. Scan it with your smartphone to gain access.

2. Select this icon to download the QR code. This allows you to print a physical copy to be printed and be used by your customers.

3. Select this icon to copy the QR code and paste it on another tab in your browser.


Introduction to Explorer

There are five main icons at the bottom of Explorer where users can click for more information.

1. Search
2. Explore
3. Directory
4. Promotions
5. Experiences

Within Explorer users will be able to:

Explore the map

On the right-hand side of the screen, you can do the following:

  • Select the compass to recenter to North

  • Select 2D or 3D mode view

  • Enable light or dark map mode

  • Share your device location

On the bottom of the screen, you have access to:

  • Quick Link Filter Icons (i.e. Click on an icon, for example Coffee, and this will show you all the available places that serve Coffee)


Get directions to and from a location

1. Click on a location in the map that you want to arrive at

2. Select the location you are going to come from (i.e. Lake Park)

3. You are given directions from your starting location with an estimated journey time and distance.


Search for Locations, see all Experiences section and view Experience details

Notice that the number 10 on the Experiences section represents the number of experiences Explorer currently contains.


Search a tenant from the directory section and click on a tenant to view more details about it


Select and check a range of available promotions that a tenant is offering


Directory Tab

Inside this tab contains all tenants that has been created for your location.
To create / edit / remove tenants completely, you need to do it inside PAM.

Introduction to the Directory Layout

  1. This is the location that contains all your tenants

  2. This is the different categories that can be clicked to filter and show specific tenants

  3. These are all the tenants under the filter of “SERVICES” and are found in “Hollywood Park District”

  4. The Explore section contains different locations at the bottom which can be clicked to show different tenants at different locations

  5. In this example, we have clicked on “Hollywood Park District” as indicated on the top of the screen.
    The other location names will be faded out


Customising the Explore section in Directory Layout

Please don’t confuse this with the Explore tab but this part will focus on the Explore section on the bottom when you click in Directory.

The purpose of the Explore section is to show tenants at different locations. If someone is in the Retail District location, all they have to do is click on Retail District and only those tenants that have been linked to appear in locations inside Retail District will appear. This makes the user experience easier and avoids confusion.

By default, if you elect not to upload a photo, the grey background will be applied to the location name as we can see with Retail District.

As a general rule, a location won’t appear in the Explore section until you link a tenant with it AND have enabled it’s settings to appear. This is important as some locations could be linked but hasn’t been enabled to show up in the location.


Welcome Screen Layout

While the screen is loading on your smartphone, you may see a loading circle appear. This can give you a quick indication of how long it takes for Explorer to load. This should not take more than a few seconds.

An example of this is shown below

For uploading a welcome screen, the image needs to be a minimum 480 x 480 px and in PNG format

Explorer allows you to upload an image that welcomes users into Explorer.

This is the default image used. You cannot disable this feature as uses the default image or your own image.

Here are some other examples of how other images look like should you upload your own.


How to upload a welcome screen

You need to have your log-in details to the correct PAM account for you to configure this section

Steps

1. In the PAM navigation menu, go to 360 Planner > Digital Signs

2. Click on the SIGN CONFIGURATION tab

3. Click on Interactive Kiosk

4. On the right-hand side, click on IDLE SCREEN

5. Make sure that you have chosen SCREEN SAVER MODE

6. Select UPLOAD to upload your own image.
Please remember that the image must be a minimum 480 x 480 px and in a PNG file.
(We have already uploaded an image so we will be using what you see in the photo below)

7. Save changes


8. Go into DIGITAL SIGN MAP

9. Search / use the filters to find and click into an Interactive Kiosk sign

10. Scroll to the bottom and scan the QR CODE on your smartphone device


11. You should now see the image appear

My Current Location Details

Explorer allows a user to use their current location when needing directions to a destination. A user that has scanned a QR Code from a kiosk might not remain in the same area, and with this feature they can use their own location to find their way to different destinations easier and faster.

Steps

1. When a user has scanned a QR Code, they will be taken to Explorer on their mobile browser (i.e. Google Chrome)

2. The user can either click [SHARE NOW] or [SKIP] to share or not share their location.
We will click share now for this example.

If a user’s location is turned off, and they press [SHARE NOW], they receive the following message.
Selecting [OK] will turn on your location automatically.

Alternatively, you may also receive this notification, which reminds you to turn on your location settings on your smartphone to be able to activate them in Explorer


If your settings are correct, your current location will pop up on Explorer map as shown on the photo below.

If you are still unable to turn on your location, you will need to go into your phone settings and turn on your location manually.


Using current location to reach a destination

Now that the user’s current location pops up, let us search for a location in Explorer to get to.

The user can click on any location in Explorer or use the search function.

Steps

1. We will click on Entry 8 as our go-to location

2. A pop-up will appear at the bottom, click on [TAKE ME THERE]


3. Under the Directions heading, your current location will appear as 'My Location'

Please note that you can also click on Car, Pram or Wheelchair symbols to get to the destination (providing they have routes available). The default direction that will pop up is the Walking symbol

4. You can see an overview of the map and the distance between your current location and your chosen destination (i.e. Entry 8)

5. Select [START]


WARNING

You might notice that the map may move around on it’s own when you start to get directions to your location. This means it is using the compass feature on your smartphone. Wherever your smartphone is facing, (i.e. if you start walking towards the right, the compass will also go in that direction on Explorer) that will also be the same direction you will face on the map.

6. A view of your current location and your chosen destination appears

7. Press the END button to exit once you have reached the destination


8. When moving the map around, a location icon will pop up. This icon is the recenter button. Selecting this button will return you back to the correct view which lets you see your location and your destination.

This recenter button is only visible when you are sharing your location

The recenter button will return you back to the view you were last on.

For example, if you were facing a certain direction when you first generated directions to a location, then the recenter button will return you back to that same direction.


What if I turn off my current location?

When the user’s current location is switched off or if they decide to switch it off while using Explorer, they will see the following in their results:

  1. The My Location will be read as Scanned Location

  2. The user’s scanned location is not their current location but the Interactive Kiosk location

Scanned Location is the Interactive Kiosk location where the user originally scanned the QR code from. If the user’s location IS NOT shared, then by default every time a user searches for directions to a location, the starting point will always be the Interactive Kiosk even if the user has left and moved into another area.

If a QR code was scanned from the dashboard (PAM OS homepage), it will not show any scanned location / starting location because that specific QR code does not belong to any Interactive Kiosk.


Manually change Scanned Location

The user is advised to keep their location on to prevent Scanned Location from being the default location.
The only other alternative to this is that the user manually selects where they currently are on the map (assuming they know where they are) if they do not want to share their location/unable to share their location.

Steps
1. Press the X button to remove Scanned Location (Interactive Kiosk Location)


2. We will choose North Plaza as our “From Location”

3. The route has now updated to show how to get to Entry 8 from North Plaza

4. Press start to begin your journey


What happens if I share my location but I’m too far away?

If a user wants to share their location but is far away from the venue / not at the venue then Explorer has been designed to track this and will send a prompt to users, letting them know that a route is not possible to be given because they aren’t there. Even if users have access to a QR code and have scanned it on their smartphone, they will receive a prompt.

This is the prompt that the user will get once they have shared their location the first time.

The user can continue to use Explorer but if they want personalised directions to a location, their location must be turned on. If the location is on but they are too far away, no personalised directions will be shown and they will be met with “Sorry, directions not available between these locations”.

This warning will alert the user that they may be out of range and / or a personalised navigation route is not yet available. This lets Explorer to be used and enjoyed by those who are within the venue.
